We are happy to welcome you to the site of the Kharkov Regional Specialized Orphanage #1.
Our Orphanage is one of the oldest orphanages of its kind in Ukraine. It was founded in 1918, originally serving as a home for children who lost their parents during the Civil War. During its 100 year history, the Orphanage has been home to nearly 7,000 orphans. Today, the Orphanage has 50 children between the ages of 2 months and 4 years.
The majority of children have pathologies of the central nervous system and musculoskeletal system. Their illness often becomes the reason for their orphanhood, as they require more attention than healthy children in nurseries or kindergartens. Experienced pediatrists, neuropathologists, psychiatrist, and teachers at our orphanage as well as specialists from other leading rehabilitation centers ensure the mental and physical growth of our children develops harmoniously.
The United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child recognizes that "the child, for the full and harmonious development of his or her personality, should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding". We, the physicians and teachers at the Orphanage, are convinced that "the Family is the only place where the child can be truly happy and healthy."
Unfortunately, not all our orphans can be adopted – about 80% of our children are disabled and require specialized care. Therefore, these children will most likely spend their lives in homes like ours, but nevertheless they, like all children, deserve the best care.
To address outstanding needs, we created the rehabilitation center at the Orphanage. Through the centre we can more effectively assist children requiring help by applying leading rehabilitation practices. With your help, we hope to bring urgent assistance to other children in other parts of Ukraine.
Thank you for visiting us! |
